It was evening time in Maggy Smith’s cottage. She couldn’t hear very well because of her old age. She used to run a bakery, but it burnt down in 1901. Maggy Moo’s Bakery was very popular and full of home baked goods. Her speciality were scones, soda bread and Victoria sandwich cakes. Children loved going after school to buy buns. They tried to get there quick before they sold out. The first two children to arrive got them for free!

When Maggy was six, her mum gave her a teddy bear. It was brown with white fur around the eyes and had a bright red bow around the neck. Maggy loved this teddy bear - it was her best friend. She kept it on the window sill in her bedroom. One night she went up to her room to go to bed. The teddy bear was not where it was supposed to be!

On the floor, she saw muddy footprints and a piece of green ribbon. She felt sad that the teddy was gone and wondered why someone would take it. She decided to go downstairs to bake cookies, where she discovered a note:

I’ve stolen your teddy, I know all about your bakery and your emerald necklace that your dad gave you that was hidden there. Leave it outside the house tomorrow evening…
