“Did you hear that?” whispered Saoirse, putting down the knife she had been using to chop carrots in the kitchen, as it was winter and it was getting dark as it came up to 5pm.
“Yes I did!” John said, nervously, his teeth chattering.
“What do you think it was? It was a big crash!”
“Are you going to investigate?” John’s long skinny fingers clenched up into a fist.
“Maybe… sure…” Saoirse said, hesitantly.
“You stay here, I’ll go up,”John offered, but he stayed sitting on the sofa.
“OK,” Saoirse sighed, with relief.
“I’ll bring a flashlight- there’s one in the drawer in the cupboard, but it’s upstairs!” John was trying to look cool in front of Saoirse. He was trying to change the subject of the conversation, because he was nervous about going upstairs.
Another crash came from upstairs. They gasped, and looked at each other in fear. The house was so old it had oil lamps, but they were only lit in the living room.
Saoirse pointed her knife towards the stairs and started to go up into the darkness. John followed behind, cowering.
The only sound they could hear now was the wind whistling through the broken windows. As they continued up the stairs, a branch crashed through the broken window. It plummeted thundering to the floor in front of them, and they saw a note attached to it! …
