There’s No Place Like Home

Cora McGlue and Darragh Curran, age 9, Co. Down

There once was a polar bear called Snowy. He lived in the North Pole [I know cool he got to see Santa every day]. Snowy lived in the North Pole but he wanted to live in a hot climate.

“It’s not right for a polar bear to want to live in a hot climate,” said Snowy’s dad.

“But I really want to,” Snowy said.

“Well it doesn’t matter if you want to or not you can’t, a polar bear never lives in a hot climate,” Snowy’s dad said.

Snowy went sulkily back to their family cave and into his room. “It’s not fair, I can do whatever I want,” he said. Then he suddenly had an idea. If he wanted to go and live in a hot climate he would have to have something to take him there and he knew just the man.

“SANTA!” he shouted. He snuck out of the cave and down to Santa’s lodge.

“Of course I can help you Snowy but there is one problem. My sleigh doesn’t work until Christmas time because the Christmas magic makes it work.”

“Oh,” Snowy said. “Well I suppose I could wait until Christmas time but it is such a long time away!” Finally it was one day to Christmas.

“I’ve got to get to Santa,” he said. “Santa is it Christmas yet?”

“Not yet, Snowy, just one day to wait,” Santa said. The next day arrived.

“Finally it’s Christmas!” Snowy said.

“Ok Snowy, calm down,” Santa said.

“When is it going to be time to go?” Snowy asked.

“Soon Snowy, soon” Santa said. “Snowy!” Santa shouted, “It’s time to go!” So Snowy and Santa set off around the world. Santa to deliver the presents and Snowy to have his wish to go and live in a hot climate.

“Snowy,” Santa shouted.

“Yes!” Snowy shouted. “My dream of living in a hot climate has almost come true!”

“Snowy we’re coming in to land, get ready to get out,” Santa said. Suddenly Snowy had a thought…did he really want to live in Florida and never see his family again?

Santa,” Snowy said, “I am feeling homesick.”

“Ok Snowy, do you want to help me deliver the rest of the presents then I will drop you home?” Santa said. So Santa and Snowy delivered the rest of the presents then headed back to the North Pole.

“Son!” Snowy’s dad shouted. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

“Sorry I left Dad, but what I’ve realised is there really is no place like home.”
