Cara Roger, age 10, Co. Down
One day Clare and her dog Timmy went to the library as usual and when they walked in they heard a thumping sound from under the floor. “What is that thumping noise?” asked Clare. “The plumber says it’s the pipes,” said the librarian. Clare was suspicious, she didn’t believe it was the pipes and went to investigate.
“The books usually are in a coloured pattern so I’ll start there,” said Clare looking through the books. She found a large leather book that looked out of order. She pulled at the spine of the book and below her feet vanished and she could hear Timmy from up above and the sound got closer until she felt Timmy’s soft paw on her hand and soon after they stopped falling and they saw green things slowly coming towards them!
“GREEN PEPPER MONSTERS!” shouted Clare with all her might. “RUN!” she screamed again.
They ran as fast as they could and reached a very old looking bridge. They ran onto the bridge. It felt very unstable. The monsters were crowding round the rope of the bridge, slowly gnawing it away. Then the bridge fell! Timmy was whimpering and Clare was screaming. Clare grasped hold of Timmy and climbed as fast as she could.
When they got to the top they heard a loud purring noise coming from a nearby cave. Timmy started jumping up and down and landed on a pressure plate. Clare went running for Timmy and also stepped on a pressure plate that sank and the huge cave got blocked by a large boulder. They heard a loud gushing noise coming from the cave.
Suddenly a great rush of water came from the cave and a giant ginger cat came out. “I am Claw the Destroyer God of all cats!” Timmy stared at Claw and ran behind Clare and started whimpering. Clare saw a large bucket of milk with a string attached to it. She ran over to it and pulled the string while avoiding Claw’s tail swipe. The bucket lowered and Claw started drinking it. At the same time the wall in front of them collapsed. They ran past Claw and fell into a large pool of freezing cold water and above them was yet another cave with a huge blue and pink dragon!
In a low rumbling voice the dragon said, “I am the wish dragon, tell me your wish, no more questions asked!”
“I wish for a pencil tree,” said Clare, “because I want to write this story for everyone to hear and Timmy wishes for…”
“Bark, bark!”
And out of nowhere a pencil tree and bacon appeared, and Clare and Timmy went back up to the library. The dragon came with them and explained that he did it because he wanted to help people have their wishes and that the monsters were their greatest fears, but bigger and scarier.
Soon after Clare sold all her books!
