There was a football match on the television and it was loud.  Tommy had been drinking all day.  It was a Saturday and he had the day off work.  He had just started work as a waiter in the big hotel.

Alan was just after beating a middle aged man with a lot of gang tattoos at pool.  The man didn’t like it and it got a bit rowdy.  Alan had led the other man on and hustled him out of money.

Tommy heard the shouting.  He turned around and he saw the man grab Alan by the collar.

Out of instinct, Tommy approached them and said, ‘Jeez what’s going on here?’

He grabbed Alan and took him out to the smoking area, ‘Is he trying to start a fight with you?’

‘I hope not, he will get smashed in a minute,’ said Alan, acting as if he were confident.

Tommy said, ‘You’re about 14. What are you doing in a pub?’  Tommy remembered how this had happened to him before.

There was a bouncer standing there.  ‘Ssssh, be quiet, they’re not supposed to know,’ said Alan through clenched teeth.

Tommy said. ‘What are you doing in here, you’re too young. Have you got fake ID?  Come here what’s your name?

‘Ahhhh…  Alan.’

‘Now if anyone starts fighting with you, come to me,’ said Tommy.

‘I can fight for myself!’ said Alan.

Tommy replied, ‘You’re about 14 - you won’t be starting a fight with anyone…’
