'Word Warriors' is a series of creative writing workshops for ages 8 to 10 to develop confidence, creativity, self-expression, emotional literacy and empathy.
The workshops are suitable for all abilities and are designed to spark an initial interest in creative writing. Participants book through the Eventbrite system (all 20 spaces have been filled) and are expected to attend all 6 sessions.
The lively, collaborative and interactive workshops will last 2 hours including a 10 minute break for a drink and a snack. The children will dream up original characters, stories, scripts and comics, poems, jokes, and even local guides. They will receive individual help from our volunteer mentors, and their group stories will be brought to life by a volunteer illustrator.
Note for Volunteer Mentors/Illustrators:
Ideally, we woud like to have the same (4 or 5) mentors for each of the 6 sessions, however, we understand that your availability may not allow for this. If you are interested in being involved, please email the volunteer coordinator (volunteer@fightingwords.co.uk) with your availability. Volunteers will be asked to arrive at 3pm for a short briefing and to prepare the space.
Series Outline (may vary): 3.15-5.15pm each Thursday for 6 weeks. New writing will be produced in each session and we will publish the children's writing in a digital book at the end of the 6 sessions.
Week 1: 19/01/23 - Storymaking and idea generation. Creativity, Empathy, Conflict and Identity. Shared Reading.
Week 2: 26/02/22 - Oral Storytelling with Janice Witherspoon from Armstrong Storytelling Trust. Confident communication, Memorisation, Place based stories.
Week 3: 2/02/23 -Scriptwriting - Realistic dialogue, Communication, Conflict and Dialogue in Drama/Film. Storyboarding/comics.
Week 4: 9/02/23 - Journalism - Local Guide for tourists, Interviewing, Mini-Zine making.
Week 5: 16/02/23 - Poetry/Songwriting with Colm Querney from Fighting Words Dublin: Values, emotions and senses. Visit to a garden. (Please note, this is mid term break week but the workshop will still be on)
Week 6: 23/02/23 - Joke-writing - humour, fun, irony, misunderstanding. Giant Pencil making - Reminder to Keep Writing.
